Hängegarten Neufra

The historical hanging garden - a monument of a special kind
The Historical Hanging Garden was built by Count Georg von Helfenstein with 202 bodies. He saw this kind of garden in other countries and thus fulfilled the wish to be able to own such a garden. In addition to the hanging garden, the Johannsen family also owns a castle hotel and a tower.

Description

The beginning of construction for the hanging garden was in 1569. There were several reasons why he had this garden built.
Before the first and probably most important: The castle and the church stand on a mountain with a lot of moraine gravel and water, whereby the mountain was always somewhat "restless". The church and the castle are protected from slipping by the construction of the historical hanging garden, which is built on walk-in vaults and large walls. Of the seven accessible vaults, three are still accessible. The garden combines garden and architecture. The historic hanging garden is a roof or terraced garden.
The restoration of the historical hanging garden is the work of Frau Waltraud Johannsen, commissioned by the memorial in 1986 to restore the former historical hanging garden.
Since 1988, the garden has been open to the public. In August 2016, the entire garden surrounding Neufra Castle was given the nature in the garden plaque.
Garden opening hours: 01 April - 31 October open daily (except Mondays) 10:30 am - 6:00 pm, free admission. A donation is requested to support the facility.
